Assoc. Prof. Sezen Soyer Uzun Receives BAGEP 2019 (Science Academy’s Young Scientist Awards Program) Award in Chemistry

Science Academy’s Young Scientist Awards Program, initiated in 2013, aims to choose and reward the best young academics under 40 years old and to support them in conducting new studies. There are 43 award-winning academics from various fields out of 310 applications this year, 3 of which are from Boğaziçi University. The Award Ceremony will be held at Hacettepe University on 26 April 2019.

Assoc. Prof. Sezen Soyer Uzun, who has been a faculty member at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Boğaziçi University since 2012, received BAGEP 2019 award in Chemistry. Dr. Soyer Uzun received her BSc (2003) and MSc (2005) degrees in Chemical Engineering from Middle East Technical University. She received her PhD degree (2009) in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Davis working on understanding the structural characteristics of oxide and chalcogenide glasses. Following her doctorate studies, she moved to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley as a post-doctoral associate (2010) where she investigated structural characteristics of calcium silicate hydrate materials. Prior to her appointment at Boğaziçi University, she worked as a Research Scientist at the Research and Development Center of ConocoPhillips/Phillips 66 Company (USA) for two years. Currently, Dr. Soyer Uzun’s research at Boğaziçi University focuses on understanding the structure–property relations at fundamental level in various systems involving biocomposites for biomedical applications and geopolymers (alternative cementitious materials) aiming to develop innovative materials that have potential for industry–scale utilization.
